thoughts of a wise woman (not me, but i concur)

Lenten thoughts over Africa

Ihad a powerful experience in the airplane on my way to Madagascar. I was reading thenovel, "What is the What" by Dave Eggers and Valentino Achak Deng about Deng's experience in Southern Sudan and in Atlanta.Anyway, my mind was full of all I had been reading about that conflict (and remembering the many, many Sudanese I had known in Atlanta),and it also brought to mind stories from Darfur, and now, Kenya. Andthere I was in the airplane flying directly across all of Sudan, then all of Kenya.I watched the map on the screen tracking our plane's progress over thenames of the places in the books and the newspapers. I realized I'dnever been so personally close to the conflict before. And I ached. Iached all over. There I was in my comfortable climate-controlled,waited-on existence in the airplane when folks directly below me wereliving and dying in a hell manufactured by human hatred. It seemed sosymbolic of the way we live our comfortable lives in separation fromtheir suffering.

Well, I took out my Benedictine prayerbook, and opened it to Tuesday evening prayer. The scripture reading was the story of Jacob's Ladder-- the connection God made between heaven and earth, the barrier brokendown. And I felt suddenly hopeful -- that it mattered for us to achefor the pain of others, to pray for them. Yes, we must act, we mustgive money, we must push politicians to make Africa a higher priority. But we also have this gift of praying that matters and that can directour action and keep it from becoming desperate, keep it filled withhope.

So let us pray, and work, and love.
